A Hawan is a Vedic ritual in which fire offerings are central. The fire that is generated during the hawan symbolizes communication with the divine. During the hawan ritual, herbal mixtures and ghee (clarified butter) are offered into the hawan fire.
Mantras (prayers) are recited which, along with the offerings, are transported in the form of smoke into the universe and the atmosphere where the divine manifests.
How do you perform a Hawan?
Supplies
- Hawan kund (iron container where the fire is lit)
- 4 glasses of pure water
- long spoon for offering ghee
- Ghee (clarified butter)
- Matches
- Camphor
- Hawan Wood (Aam ke lakrie)
- Hawan Samagrie (mixture of herbs and woods)*completely available for purchase in our store or at www.reltra.com
- Samidha
Short version of a Hawan (fire offering) ritual that you can perform at home yourself using our explanation.
Rinse the hawan kund with water beforehand and place 4 pieces of wood in the kund, place them in an overlapping square in the shape of a fence#. You can place cotton wool (soaked in ghee) in the middle so that the fire burns more easily. Then place the four glasses of water at the four corners of the hawan kund.
Step 1
The cleaning
At every pooja of hawan ritual it is customary to cleanse the surroundings and yourself. During the cleansing a little water is taken in the left palm and then with three fingers (ring finger, thumb and middle finger) the relevant body part is touched.
- Ohm waang mè aasyastoe(your mouth)
- Ohm Nasor with prano astoe (both of your nostrils)
- Ohm akshoor mè chakshoor astoe (both of your eyes)
Cleaning the environment:
Ohm aapawitrah pawitroowah sarvah stanghato piewah, yah smaret pundari jawsham sa wah bhyaahtanah soechihie
''Oh, if someone or something is impure, purify it in spite of all circumstances into pure purity. He who remembers pundharikaksham (name for Vishnu "thou with lotus eyes") becomes pure both outwardly and inwardly."
Step 2
Lighting the fire.
Light a block of kapoor with a match and place it lit on a spoon. Then place the lit camphor in the Hawan kund (fire pot) while reciting the mantra below with devotion
recitesThe fire will now slowly build up.
The element Fire is a highly valued element within Hinduism, it symbolizes life force, energy and transformation and moksha (spiritual salvation).
Ohm bhur bhuvah svah dhyauhriwah bhumna prithivie variemna, thasyaaste prithivie deva djadjanie, prishthe agni mannaadhyayaah dadhe.
"O Almighty Divinity, our protector, the creator, who manifests in three places, the earth, the atmosphere, the heaven.I hereby place the fire in the Hawan kund which implies all the powers and energy sources of nature. Your immeasurable creation where all the inhabitants of the three worlds reside feel blessed when performing the sacrifices''
Step 3
Fanning the fire.
Now you should fan the fire with your right hand so that the flame becomes bigger and will not go out during the ritual.
Here we symbolically ask that all knowledge and wisdom be with us during the hawan.
Ohm udbhudhyasya swaagnee pratieh djaagrihi, twaamishta purte, sah gwham shriedjatamayam cha,
ashmeen sadhaaste adhyutarasmien, vishwe devah djadjmaanas cha sie-dattah
"May this fire expand and grow, with de ritual performing the necessary actions may be well disposed
complete.May the wise and the wise settle in the north of Hawankund"
Step 4
Samidha offerings
During this part we offer 3 round sticks to the fire, this symbolizes nourishment. We satisfy the need of the fire by feeding it with wood and ghee so that it continues to burn flourishing. With each mantra take a stick (samidha) in your hand and dip the two ends in ghee.
1. The first mantra where 1 samidha is offered:
Ohm ayantha idma aatma djaat vèdase nedhyasva vardhyaswa chedha vardhaya chaasmaan pradjhaya pashurbhir-bramha varchase naa naadhyena samèdhaya swaahaa..
(put wood in the fire)
iedam agnaye djaat vedase idanna mamma
“Oh souls, feed the ever-burning fire with ghee and samagree and may this offering attain agni.”
2. Dthe second mantra in which 1 samidha is offered:
Ohm samidhaagni dhuwasyataa ghritair-bodhaya yatatithiem, asmien hawya djuhotana swaahaa....
(put the wood in the fire)
iedam agnaye idanna mamma
''I offer the wood with the melted ghee to the burning fire that is present in everything material and immaterial in the world.
May this sacrifice attain agni''
3. The third and fourth mantras where 1 samidha is offered, place the wood in the fire at the second mantra:
1)
Ohm soeh samidhaa yahsotchise ghrietan tievram djuhotanah, agnaye djaatah vedase swaahaa..iedam djaat vedase idanna mamma
''This offering of ghee and wood is all that matters to the fire, may this offering attain agni''
2)
Ohm tantwaa samieddhie-bhirangiroo ghrietènah vardhayaamasie wrieha tjohtchaah yawiesthayaah swaahaa........(put the wood in the fire)
idan agnaye angierasè idanna mamma
''by offering wood in combination with ghee we let it fire grow and nourish further which encourages the fire to always watch over us and generates progress. May this affer attain agni''
Step 5
Water offerings
In this part of the hawan water is offered in each direction (north, east, south and west) where we sprinkle the relevant direction on the hawankund with each mantra. Symbolism; we first offered the fire food after which it is customary to offer water as a ''drink''. One wants to be prosperous in every direction and to contemplate spiritually which is why the water offerings are made in every direction.
- Oh my goodness anumanyasva(east, right side of hawankund)
- Ohm anumatè anumanyasva(west, left side hawankund)
- Oh saraswatya anumanyasva(north, top)
- Ohm deva sawitaa prasoeh yagyam prasoewah yagyapatim bhagaayah divyo gandharwam ketapoe kètana poenatoe waatchaspatoem waachana swadhatoeh (around the entire hawankund, all four corners)
Step 6
Ghee offerings
In this section an offering is made for each element of nature (fire, the moon, the sun, earth, air, space, the atmosphere etc.)
One is continuously nourished by this natural
energies, the air lets us breathe and nourishes us with oxygen, water lets us hydrate, the earth nourishes us with food and the sun nourishes us with vitamins and makes the crops grow. The offerings are made with ghee (with samagrie is also possible) using vedic mantras.
*you offer the ghee with
swahaa.
